The Blue Ridge Center for Music & Creative Arts recently concluded its Visual Arts 2026 workshop, welcoming a select group of talented young artists for five days of intensive study, creative exploration, and artistic mentorship. Held at Possum’s Store in Criglersville, Virginia, the program provided students with an immersive learning experience under the guidance of nationally recognized professional artists while enjoying lodging and meals at nearby Robison River Retreat.
Under the direction of Renee Balfour, students received individualized instruction in a variety of artistic disciplines, including oil painting, watercolor, and stone carving. Working closely with Renee and faculty members Gary Colson and Jane Skafte, participants strengthened their technical skills while exploring new approaches to composition, color, texture, and creative expression. The workshop’s small class size allowed each student to receive personalized mentoring and portfolio guidance tailored to their artistic goals.

Complementing the studio instruction, students had daily mindfulness activities including a guided art-and-nature hike. These practices encouraged students to cultivate focus, creative energy, and confidence while demonstrating how mindfulness can become an important part of an artist’s creative process.
Throughout the week, students transformed Possum’s Store into a vibrant working studio where ideas were exchanged, techniques were refined, and friendships were formed. The collaborative atmosphere inspired participants to learn not only from the faculty but also from one another, creating a supportive community that encouraged artistic risk-taking and personal growth.
The workshop concluded with a public reception and exhibition at Possum’s Store, where family members, friends, and community supporters gathered to celebrate the students’ accomplishments. The exhibition showcased an impressive collection of paintings, sculptures, and watercolors created during the week, reflecting both the remarkable talent of the students and the progress they achieved through intensive instruction and mentorship.
The Blue Ridge Center for Music & Creative Arts extends its sincere appreciation to Program Director Renee Balfour, and faculty members Gary Colson and Jane Skafte for creating an inspiring environment where young artists could develop their skills, expand their creative vision, and build lasting connections.
As with all BRCMCA educational programs, Visual Arts 2026 was offered with full scholarships, ensuring that financial barriers did not prevent talented students from participating. The workshop continues the Center’s mission of providing exceptional educational opportunities that prepare the next generation of artists through world-class instruction, mentorship, and meaningful creative experiences.
