July 2, 2025Young Talent Honed at Bluegrass Workshop
GRAVES MOUNTAIN LODGE, June 27 – The halls of Graves Mountain Lodge recently resonated with the spirited strumming, plucking, and bowing of aspiring young bluegrass musicians, as the Blue Ridge Center for Music & Creative Arts workshop concluded with a vibrant student performance on Friday evening. This intensive program, designed to cultivate emerging talent, provided a unique opportunity for advanced students to learn directly from nationally recognized bluegrass artists.

Under the direction of Vince May, the week-long program, which ran from student check-in on Monday, June 23, to check-out on Saturday, June 28, immersed 10 young musicians, aged 11 to 16, in the intricacies of bluegrass. The intimate setting, with just two or three students assigned to each of five concurrent workshops, fostered a high degree of personalized instruction.
The distinguished faculty, a roster of celebrated bluegrass figures, led the focused workshops. Valerie Smith guided students in songwriting and vocals, while Joe Zauner oversaw banjo instruction. Doug Marshall mentored bass players, Lisa Kay led the mandolin workshop, and Wally Hughs provided expertise on the fiddle. Bruce Gair served as a program assistant, helping to ensure the smooth operation of the week’s activities.

The format emphasized a blend of one-on-one instrumental instruction and concurrent small-group music workshops. Students also engaged in rigorous rehearsals, culminating in their highly anticipated live performance. This practical application of their newly refined skills proved a highlight for both participants and attendees.
A significant aspect of the program was its accessibility. All costs, including instruction, room, and board at the picturesque Graves Mountain Lodge, were entirely underwritten by the Blue Ridge Center for Music & Creative Arts. Every accepted student received a full scholarship, removing financial barriers for talented young musicians. While scholarships covered all expenses, the Center encouraged and welcomed donations from parents and the broader community to support future initiatives.

The program at Graves Mountain Lodge served as a testament to the enduring appeal of bluegrass and the commitment of the Blue Ridge Center for Music & Creative Arts to nurturing the next generation of performers. The enthusiastic applause that filled the lodge on Friday evening underscored the success of this concentrated effort to develop both individual skill and collaborative musical relationships.
